Tesla is planning to open its comprehensive global network of Supercharger EV charging stations to other electric cars sometime “later this year,” according to a tweet published by CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday.

Currently, only Tesla vehicles are capable of connecting and receiving energy from the 25,000-plus Supercharger network, which launched in the U.S. but now has locations in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. It’s one of Tesla’s most valuable assets, giving it a competitive edge over other passenger EVs whose brands do not have comparable alternatives, instead relying on third-party charging companies such as Blink Charging, EVgo, ChargePoint, and Volkswagen’s Electrify America network.

Even when Tesla opens its Superchargers to competitors, non-Tesla EV owners won’t be able to simply pull up and plug in their cars. Tesla uses a proprietary charging connector that isn’t found on any other EV, meaning owners will likely need to have some sort of adaptor handy if they want to juice up. Developing those adaptors will likely take some time.

It’s unclear exactly when Tesla plans to flip the switch to let other cars sip electricity from its Supercharger network, but seeing as how there are only five months left in the year, we shouldn’t have to wait long.
