BMW will have a Super Bowl 2022 commercial

While EVs remain a niche market today, automakers are pouring billions of dollars into them in anticipation that the demand will grow in the coming years. BMW—which still uses the “i” designation for its electric vehicles—aims for at least 50% percent of global sales to be fully electric by 2030, according to Automotive News.

With that backdrop, it seems natural that BMW might want to once again use its Super Bowl ad to plug EVs. However, the brand is not tipping its hand on details. Goodby Silverstein & Partners—which has significant Super Bowl ad experience—is BMW’s lead U.S. agency and will handle the ad.

BMW is the fifth automaker to confirm 2022 in-game ads, following Nissan, Toyota, General Motors and Kia. Last year, only three automakers bought ads— Stellantis (Jeep), GM and Toyota. In the 2020 Super Bowl, six automakers bought ads. The category’s recent high-water mark came in 2018, when 11 auto brands ran ads.

Stellantis has yet to confirm its 2022 Super Bowl plans but has a history of making last-minute decisions on the game. Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Honda are among the brands that have confirmed they won’t be in the game.
